The “green energy” movement is one that has been capturing the U.S. by storm in the last couple of decades. People are looking for better ways to provide energy to their homes and businesses, and solar panels are one way that many people are turning to help make their energy consumption more eco-friendly.

Just like any form of energy, there are pros and cons to solar panels for home use. The following are a few of those options to help you make an educated decision whether solar energy is the best way for you to reduce your carbon footprint.

Pros of Solar Energy

Some of the pros of solar energy include:

Protecting Our Planet
“Green energy” such as using solar panels on your home helps emit less harmful chemicals into the atmosphere. Installing solar panels on your home means you are making a positive change to your energy consumption, and helping make the world a cleaner, less polluted place for everyone to live (including yourself).

Savings for the Long Term

Over time, solar energy can help you save money on what would otherwise be expensive heating, air conditioning and other energy bills. While there is an upfront cost to install solar panels, it can help save you money over the long term. Even if you don’t plan to live in the home for your entire life, solar panels can increase the resale value of your home by as much as $15,000.

Depending on which state you live in, solar panel incentives can offset the initial installation costs as well.  In the two specific states we service–Wisconsin and Illinois–you can get up to 50% and 70% of the costs credited back, respectively.

And most solar panels come with a long-term guarantee that covers maintenance and replacements (our panels have a minimum 25-year performance warranty), so you can rest easy knowing that your investment gets protected. Moreover, most solar panels require little to no maintenance and the parts are durable and generally last for decades, making your investment well worthwhile.

The bottom line, it’s an investment that pays for itself.

New Financing Deals

A whole variety of different financing deals such as no-money-down options are making solar panels more affordable to the everyday middle-class working person. These deals are a great way to take advantage of savings while also making your footprint on the environment smaller. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

Cons of Solar Energy

Some of the cons of solar energy include:

Light Access Can Be Limited

Depending upon the area in which you live, sunshine might not be as frequent during some months as it is during others, thus limiting the amount of energy that solar panels can produce. Other factors such as which way your house faces or if you have large shade trees could also affect how much sunlight they get and how effective these panels are at providing for your family’s energy needs.

Cutting Down Trees May Be Required

In order to give solar panels the adequate sunlight they need to function properly, you may have to cut down trees that block the way. Cutting down trees is not exactly friendly to the environment unless the trees are being planted elsewhere, but it may be necessary in order to ensure that the solar panel gets enough sun exposure to provide year-round solar energy.

Solar Panels Take Up Space

The more energy you need to produce, the more solar panels you’ll need. Some homes do not have enough roof space to fit all the solar panels they’d need to fully offset energy costs. However, even if it’s not possible to be fully reliant on solar energy, many homeowners opt to install solar panels to cover a portion of their energy needs.

The good news, however, is that these cons apply to very few homes. As long as you own your home, your roof faces south, east or west, and you have limited trees or shading, solar panels are still a viable option for many residents.

While most homeowners find that the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to installing solar panels, you must make the decision based on what’s best for you and your family.
