So what are the steps within an off-grid system? Like standard systems, the sunlight is captured by the panels and then relayed to an inverter that turns the energy into electricity. Finally, it goes to a battery inverter where the energy is stored until you need to use it. As you can tell, there are quite a few working parts.

What Makes it Off-Grid Solar?

Off-grid solar has one element that other solar systems don’t have. That element is the battery. If you leave your house hooked up to the grid, you won’t need a battery or a place to store power. If your solar system wasn’t producing enough electricity, your house would simply pull from the power lines that are still connected to it.

One system isn’t necessarily better than the other. The system you choose to use has more to do with what you need than it does with anything else. If you do go off-grid, you will need to have a third source of power (often a generator) to produce electricity during cloudy winter days.

What is an Off-Grid Battery?

When you think of a solar battery, at first, you might think of something like a modified car battery. But, in fact, they are much much larger than the average car battery.

An off-grid battery or solar battery is essentially a very large deep cycle battery. They come in many different sizes. Some are smaller, and some are quite large. Before buying a solar battery, you’ll need to make sure that it’s big enough to handle what you want to power and that there is enough capacity to power your home. Second, you’ll want to make sure it’s high quality and that it will last. Solar batteries can be extremely expensive, and you don’t want to have to purchase them often.
